Assistant Professor in Emergent Digital Practices at the University of Denver

The Emergent Digital Practices program brings together art, design, media, culture and technology studies in a hands-on, collaborative environment. Technology links academic disciplines with professional fields and joins shared communities with our personal lives in many new and exciting ways. To understand and explore this landscape, we foster a robust praxis that infuses digital practices of making with contemporary theoretical approaches to cultural technologies. Our investigations and critique of emergent digital modalities include studies in areas such as science fiction, trans-global politics, video, sound, games, new materialism, art and science interactions, critical theory, and more. Emergent Digital Practices is an interdisciplinary program at the University of Denver, which is a research-intensive private institution for the public good. (https://www.du.edu/ahss/edp) As a whole, the University is increasingly focused on community engaged research and coursework, encouraging scholars to develop networks and often funding beyond the academy. EDP offers BA, BFA, MA and MFA degrees and the normal teaching load is 5 courses spread across 3 academic quarters in an academic year.

General Summary
The Emergent Digital Practices program is accepting applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor to start in Fall 2020. We seek an artist/scholar who is critically, theoretically and creatively engaged in the practices and discourses of Emergent Digital Media. We are interested in candidates that demonstrate the potential for excellent teaching and will have a research and creative practice that complements existing program strengths. Candidates should demonstrate compelling breadth across the digital arts/humanities/social sciences/ sciences/technology, preferably in areas and ways not yet addressed by current EDP faculty. We are especially interested in candidates who consider emergent and forward-reaching methods of dissemination of their outcomes, including writing, as part of their practice in emergent digital media fields.

Essential Functions

  • Demonstrate a commitment to a sustained and advancing creative/research practice.
  • Teach a combination of critical, making, and additional undergraduate and graduate classes in the program. The successful applicant will be required to teach at multiple levels of a curriculum that includes a BA, BFA, MA, and MFA, and in the common curriculum.
  • Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students and serve on graduate research committees.
  • Participate in the maintenance and updating of the curriculum, policies, and the collective creative spaces as well as service to the program, college and university.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Contribute to EDP's existing foundation courses.
  • Expand our offerings in studio courses covering emergent digital practices.
  • Contribute new critical cultures classes for EDP majors and minors.
  • Expand our contributions to the common curriculum of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, especially lower division students from across the college, through introductory histories of digital art, digital culture, and theory.
  • Develop research and writing-intensive, themed Advanced Seminars for undergraduates from across the University as a whole.
  • Convey and guide undergraduate and graduate students through the processes of research, critical/theoretical writing, and emergent digital making.
  • Work effectively with ethnically/racially diverse populations and bring a multicultural perspective to our program and students.
  • Understand, value, and foster the connections across disciplines that come from being at a Liberal Arts University.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD, MFA, MPS, or equivalent required at time of appointment.
  • Teaching experience beyond a Graduate Teaching Assistantship with a demonstrated potential for excellent teaching.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD, MFA, MPS, or equivalent at time of application.
  • Two or more years of teaching experience beyond a Graduate Teaching Assistantship with demonstrated excellence in teaching.
  • Research or creative practice of national and possibly international scope.
  • Potential to direct and guide students in advanced research.
  • Deeply integrates a diversity of artists and scholars into their courses, to foster and sustain an inclusive learning environment.

Salary Range
Salary will be determined by the qualifications of the selected candidate balanced with departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information.
