Adjunct Professor needed to teach Understanding New Media

Hunter College, Department of Film & Media Adjunct Professor needed for fall 2023 (semester begins 8/25, ends 12/20):

MEDIA 280 Understanding New Media
Tuesday 11:30am to 2:20pm, in person at Hunter College – 68th & Lexington

Course Description: This course deals with the convergence of media, communications technologies, art, design, and culture. It is intended to familiarize students with important approaches in new media, focusing on the history of the medium and the conceptual history of interactivity in art and communication.

Extended Course Description
The term New Media has been used to describe many themes, processes, trends and techno social cultural developments that have arisen in our society in the 20th and 21st Centuries. This course will introduce – and ask students to analyze and discuss – the central themes and debates in new media studies by looking at the key components of computer and/or digital culture (interactivity, cybernetics, hypertexts, memes, viral video, networks, databases, robotics) and placing them within a historical context in order to discern how these developments have built the world around us. In studying New Media, we will rely heavily on new forms of expression in art, literature and general culture as well as computer science by revisiting key digital artworks and new media artifacts primarily since the 1960s. As the content of what we consider New Media is by nature of the term always shifting to include the new, the cutting-edge, the groundbreaking, additional contemporary texts and current examples will be brought in over the course of the semester to supplement the readings. We will look at examples including such recent techno social forms as glitch art, online anonymity and surfing clubs, drones, electronic surveillance, multitasking, trolls, the “robotic moment,” cyber libertarianism, biotechnology, and other terms discussed in class. Additionally, students are highly encouraged to make use of the city around them, to visit, study and report back on new media art or innovative technologies they may find in the city.
