Assistant Professor in Design – The University at Buffalo

The Department of Art at the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York, invites applications for a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Design. We seek candidates who engage in interdisciplinary and experimental approaches to design research, practice and pedagogy and are able to move between analog and digital environments.

Situated in an innovative and experimental art and design program, the design and emerging practices concentration area encourages cross-discipline inquiry to communicate solutions and experiences for a broad range of contexts and audiences. The ideal candidate will demonstrate professional knowledge of the field and an understanding of design history, methodology, and critical issues in addition to a clear research agenda in their design practice. An advanced level of expertise in one or more of the following areas is desired: print design and digital publishing, information design, interaction design, sustainability and social design in addition to experience in typography and other forms of visual rhetoric.

The department has recently launched PLATFORM, a new socially engaged design lab. Candidates with an interest in community engagement and collaboration are encouraged to apply.

As a faculty we strive to reflect the broad range of student communities at Buffalo, and seek candidates with a pedagogy that attends to student diversity in the studio classroom who can demonstrate a record of inclusive teaching practices. Candidates with direct experience working with historically marginalized groups and perspectives are especially encouraged to apply.

Located at SUNY’s flagship research university in an emerging post-industrial city with a vibrant cultural scene, the department offers a BA and BFA in Graphic Design. The department also contributes to an interdisciplinary graduate degree in Critical Museum Studies and offers additional graduate programs in Visual Studies and MFA in Studio Art.

The candidate is expected to maintain a research practice, teach two courses a semester, serve on graduate thesis committees and contribute to the development of the design and emerging practices curriculum and the new socially engaged design lab along with service to the department and university.

University at Buffalo is an affirmative action equal opportunity employer and, in keeping with our commitment, welcomes all to apply including veterans and individuals with disabilities.
