QUBIT AI

In its 25 years of existence, the International Electronic Language Festival (FILE) is an internationally renowned Brazilian project that since 2000 has explored the intersection between art and technology. With more than two decades of history, the festival stands out for fostering exhibition spaces and debate about artistic innovations driven by disruptive and innovative technologies, inviting the public to get involved with experimental forms of art that challenge the boundaries of conventionality. Currently, two of these technologies stand out in the contemporary scenario: the accelerated development of quantum computing and artificial intelligence corroborated by synthetic data.

Quantum computing, an emerging revolution in the technological field, offers a new range of creative possibilities for contemporary artists. This new era allows the exploration of unprecedented frontiers through a new computational format that consists mainly of quantum superposition and entanglement, a new field of exploration for computer science, as well as for the arts in general; on the other hand, artificial intelligence, fueled by synthetic data, offers artists a new way of making and understanding art, opening up space for new forms, concepts and artistic expressions.

Entitled QUBIT AI, the exhibition delves into this unexplored territory presenting a selection of works of art resulting from the connection between artistic creation and technology, proposing a theoretical reflection on what the interrelationship between quantum computers and synthetic artificial intelligence will be.

Visitors will be invited to experience immersive installations, experimental videos, digital sculptures and other forms of interactive art, which intertwine reality and imagination. The exhibition encourages reflections on the influence of technology on art and contemporary society, while at the same time providing an environment to compare already established technological arts (analog and digital) with the possible futures of art in the synthetic era, enhanced by quantum computing . The QUBIT AI exhibition at FILE SP 2024 transcends the mere presentation of works of art; it is a journey to the limits of human creativity, driven by the convergence of art, science and technology.

25 years of FILE – Current technologies and artistic creation

We hosted in our Exhibition Space at Centro Cultural Fiesp the 25th edition of the International Festival of Electronic Art (FILE), one of the pioneers in Brazil in promoting the relationship between art and technology.

Entitled QUBIT AI, this year’s exhibition addresses quantum computing and artificial intelligence, two technologies that stand out today and allow new artistic possibilities, in addition to the creation of new forms and concepts.

The works presented here are the result of the influences of these technologies on artistic creation. In a time of rapid transformations, accelerated by quantum computing, we can reflect on the impacts caused on society and art, especially on artistic creativity and future perspectives.

SESI-SP is an institution that works for education in a broad sense, where culture plays a prominent role. Thus, all actions and projects developed by the institution aim to train new audiences in the arts, disseminate and access culture for free, in addition to promoting the national creative economy.

OPENING LECTURE
During the opening, FILE 2024: QUBIT AI will have the honor of hosting the lecture “The new quantum revolution in information technology” by Paulo Nussenzveig , Pro-Rector of Research and Innovation at the University of São Paulo and PhD in Physics Quantum from the Université Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris VI).

“The new quantum revolution in information technology”
The UN proclaimed the year 2025 as the “International Year of Quantum Science and Technologies”, in celebration of the centenary of the formulation of quantum physics. One hundred years old, this theory of very strange ideas is allowing us to create new technologies for processing, storing and communicating information. How is it possible that what Einstein called “spooky action at a distance” is relevant to the security of the purchases we make over the internet? The talk will discuss how these strange ideas pave the way for faster computers, safer communications, innovations in healthcare and even in the agri-food industry.

Exploring Quantum Computing: What it is and how it works.

Quantum computing is a super advanced way of processing and manipulating information, which, together with quantum technology 2.0, could transform the 21st century in a disruptive way.

Roberto Serra (UFABC)
PhD in Physics from the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar), completed a post-doctoral research internship at the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine (London, England). He is dedicated to the areas of Quantum Information and Computing, Open Quantum Systems, Quantum Optics and Fundamentals of Quantum Mechanics

Breno Marques (UFABC)
PhD in Physics from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (2013) and post-doctorate from the University of Stockholm and University of São Paulo. He currently works on quantum information and quantum optics.

Gustavo Wiederhecker (UNICAMP)
PhD from the State University of Campinas and post-doctorate from Cornell University (Michal Lipson group). He is an assistant professor (MS3) at the Gleb Wataghin Institute of Physics at Unicamp.

Luciano Cruz (UFABC)
PhD in Physics from the University of São Paulo (USP) in the area of ​​Quantum Optics and Atomic Physics under the guidance of Professor Paulo Nussenvzveig. He worked as a postdoctoral researcher linked to Professor Aephraim Steinberg’s group at the University of Toronto (U of T, Canada) in the area of ​​Experimental Quantum Information with Atomic Systems.



QUANTUM
PROGRAMMING



Quantum Computing (QC) is an emerging technology that unites Computer Science and Quantum Mechanics to solve problems that challenge classical computers. With the potential to optimize the processing of large volumes of data, this emerging technology has the potential to bring great contributions to the industry, impacting areas such as cybersecurity, simulation and optimization of industrial and logistical processes and the development of new high-tech materials.

SENAI-SP, always at the technological forefront, recognizes quantum computing as one of the main trends in the coming years. Since August 2023, the São Caetano unit – Escola SENAI “Paulo Skaf” – has had a 3-qubit quantum computer, which uses magnetic resonance principles for its operation.

Based on the commitment to democratize access to this technology with great potential, this quantum computer is used to mobilize students, teachers, researchers and entrepreneurs to spread knowledge about QC and explore new practical applications.

In FILE, SENAI-SP presents a playful application that combines images and sounds to represent the qubit, the basic unit of quantum information.



Quantum Culture

Digital computers process bits of information from Zero and One, while quantum computers calculate qubits that can be Zero and One at the same time, performing simultaneous calculations, teleporting or entangling information, in a faster and more sophisticated way. Although experiments in quantum computing are not new, their development and applicability are still incipient. Every day, quantum computing approaches and generates curiosity about its future. Anyone who has experienced the digital revolution can imagine the changes that quantum technology could bring to culture: new forms of communication, medicines, cryptography, in other words, new discoveries. The purpose of this exhibition is to present rare artistic works based on quantum computing and logic. They are scientific and artistic experiments that dare to speculate on innovative paths, materials, logics that will certainly affect our culture.



1. Eduardo Reck Miranda – Sounding Qubits – Brazil
Although he has learned classical musical instruments since childhood, Eduardo Miranda’s favorite tool for composing is the computer. The researcher has been delving into artificial intelligence and innovative computing methods for compositing for some time, as they offer fresh insights and ideas beyond his own.

A quantum computer deals with information encoded as qubits. A qubit is to a quantum computer what a bit is to a digital one: a basic unit of information. In hardware, qubits exist in the subatomic world. They are subject to the laws of quantum mechanics.

Quantum computers are like super-powered versions of classical digital computers. While a digital computer processes data in a linear, step-by-step fashion, a quantum computer can explore many possibilities at once.

Operating a quantum computer requires different ways of thinking about encoding and processing information. This is where composers can benefit greatly. This technology is destined to facilitate the development of unprecedented ways of creating music.

2. Gabriela Barreto Lemos – Quantum Photography – Brazil
Quantum photography technique that allows you to record images without light passing through the object.

Typically, a beam of light interacts with an object; In this same beam, the image of that object is formed, which is recorded on a camera, on paper or directly into the eye. This research used two quantumly entangled photon beams. An infrared photon was directed at a silicon wafer engraved with the image of a cat. The other photon, red, was sent on a different trajectory, did not pass through the silicon plate and was detected by an EMCCD (electron-multiplying charge-coupled device – a photographic camera with sensitivity to very low intensity light). The image of the cat engraving was recorded by the camera, which only detected the red light, which did not touch the engraving. It is the first time that an image has been captured in a beam of light that has not interacted with the object that produced the image.

The experiment, led by researcher Gabriela Barreto Lemos, was carried out at the Institut für Quantenoptik und Quanteninformation in Vienna, 2014.

3. SENAI – Quantum Computer – Brazil
For the first time, an art exhibition presents a fully functioning quantum computer.

A quantum computer generates a random qubit, represented by the Bloch sphere. The properties of this qubit are converted into an audio signal using a Python script, making them audible and visible in a sound wave accompanied by its spectrum.

1. Anna Vasof & VRinMotion Team – The Cage of Time – Austria
Interactive installation that presents a kinetic instrument object and virtual reality glasses, functioning as a device that animates the illusion of the passage of time in virtual space. In the fabric of existence, time weaves a cage around our ephemeral moments, limiting our perceptions of the past, present and future. By embracing this paradox, we may discover that the cage of time becomes the crucible where the alchemy of experience transforms our understanding of existence.

2. Banz & Bowinkel – Bots – Germany
Bots presents a computer-controlled society through a series of algorithmically controlled humanoid avatars that appear on physical carpets using augmented reality (AR). Real-time performances synthesize human behavioral patterns into a formalized digital social study. Omnipresent, combined with our devices and incorporated into virtual environments, the work reminds us of our own digitalized world, in which we are surrounded by invisible bots.

3. Camila Magrane – The Witness – United States and Venezuela
Image activated by augmented reality, where 3D animated subjects and scenarios are integrated into a physical photograph. Inspired by the work of Carl Jung, the image is part of a larger series that explores themes such as identity, introspection and transformation. Through AR, game elements were introduced into the piece, offering virtual content unlockable through interactions.

4. Ines Alpha – 3D Makeup – France
Ines Alpha, a digital artist specializing in 3D makeup, constantly seeks artistic collaborations that transcend her own face. Working only on her personal characteristics became restrictive and monotonous for Ines. Starting from faces as blank canvases, she incorporates digital elements that ‘amplify’ unique personalities, styles and essences.

5. Klaus Obermaier, Stefano D’Alessio & Martina Menegon – EGO – Austria
The mirror stage in psychology explains how the Ego forms through objectification, where one’s visual appearance conflicts with emotional experience, a concept called ‘ alienation’ by psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan. The interactive installation EGO reenacts and reverses this process by distorting the mirror image based on the user’s movements, highlighting the tension between the real and the symbolic, the Ego and the It, subject and object.

6. Marc Lee & Shervin Saremi – Speculative Evolution, Prototype 1 – Switzerland
Speculative experiment on a future ecosystem under strict control. The narrative takes place in a simulation, 30 years in the future, where artificial intelligence and synthetic biology collaborate to optimize an environment for cultivated species. An AI-powered simulator helps visitors generate new species to balance the ecosystem. Inspiration comes from Elizabeth Kolbert’s book Under the White Sky and artists’ stories about life on a damaged planet.

7. Marc Vilanova – Cascade – Spain
Waterfalls are a continuous source of infrasonic frequency found in nature. Although inaudible to humans, they play a crucial role in ecosystems, especially for migratory birds who use them as a compass. However, many waterfalls have lost their frequencies due to climate change. The work creates an immersive experience in which the audience interacts with the visualization of sound waves, experiencing the vibration of sound through illuminated strings.

8. Matthias Oostrik – The Forgettable Art Machine – Netherlands / Netherlands
The Forgettable Art Machine is an artificial intelligence-driven video installation. When facing the panel, the public has their image captured, starting a cycle of analysis, creation and destruction. From this data, a composite emerges, slowly transforming the visitors’ image into a generative visualization. Once the cycle is complete, the composition is deleted, waiting for a new audience to be captured.

9. Max Haarich (Project Smart Hans) – Smart Hans – Germany
Project Smart Hans is a synthetic reincarnation of Clever Hans, a horse that became famous in the early 20th century for apparently answering mathematical questions by tapping its hoof. The interactive installation features an animated horse that can guess any number in its mind through posture recognition. At the same time a fun joke and an illustration of why we worry about artificial intelligence.

10. Paul Gründorfer & Leonhard Peschta – The Sea – Austria
The Sea is an extraction of a complex natural phenomenon, resulting in an artificial emulation that develops a life form of its own. Just like the sea with its endless waves, this artificial system follows the impact of an immersive state, leading to a unique vision of an artificial generator. Despite appearing chaotic, it is capable of generating associations ranging from the movement of waves to science fiction scenarios.

11. Seph Li – Everything Before, Everything After – China and United Kingdom
A digital installation features a winding river in Chinese ink style, symbolizing time and transition. Touch screens allow visitors to paint over it, altering its course unpredictably. The river embodies history and the future, with each trace contributing to its eternal flow through space and time. Recorded interactions ensure its perpetual existence.

CAP/ECA/USP PARTNERSHIP –ENTRE-LUGARES
In the LED SHOW category, FILE 2024 receives a partnership with the Visual Arts Course of the Department of Plastic Arts of the School of Communications and Arts of the University of São Paulo. The work was developed with the guidance of professor Dr. Silvia Laurentiz, and collaboration with Manuela de Souza Leite.

This partnership seeks to reaffirm the connection with national universities, supporting the stimulation and production of art in new media: a unique opportunity to access languages, cutting-edge technologies and innovative resources for reflection and experimentation in the artistic environment and cultural circuits.

Entre-lugaresis a compilation of videos, independent of each other, that are connected by a thematic axis: life in the city. The concept ‘between places’ arises to reflect the social dynamics in Latin American territories, often made invisible by borders, which are often diffuse. In this way, each group dialogues with its own perspective based on established symbols of São Paulo’s imagination, such as the subway, crowds, buildings and advertisements, in order to reflect the city’s repetitive, exhausting and chaotic dynamics. Thus, this work seeks to highlight the urban contradictions experienced in the in-between place in which we live.

IED PARTNERSHIP –MEMÓRIAS
The partnership between IED and FILE began in 2010, and since then several projects and collaborations have been carried out. This year, 2024, IED students were invited to create an animation for the FILE LED SHOW, reinforcing FILE’s purpose of stimulating the creative production of young Brazilians, as well as IED’s, to promote interaction with companies and institutions relevant cultural activities such as FILE and give students the opportunity to showcase their talents.

The animation created for LED SHOW is the result of research carried out by IED SP’s bachelor’s degree students in graphic and digital design on topics of interest to the class that were interpreted and translated visually mediated by technology. Memories arising from the individual’s formation process during childhood are accessed and reconfigured in everyday experience, from places of affection to fears already overcome, from fantasies typical of this phase to memories of stories that were established.
