The Interactive Media program at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) seeks to appoint up to three candidates to a multi-year visiting professor position or similar. These positions are multi-year, potentially renewable non-tenure-track appointments. Visiting faculty with existing academic appointments must be able to obtain a leave of absence and a letter of no objection from their home institution.
The Interactive Media program is a Bachelor of Arts major at NYUAD that combines art, interaction design, communications, computer science, and engineering. The program is housed in the University’s Arts and Humanities Division and has a broad reach across the University. The mission of the program is to foster the creative use of emerging technologies for communication and expression as well as to leverage the creative process as a means to engage in both theoretical and critical discourse.
NYUAD values diversity, inclusion, belonging, and equity; such principles are fundamental to the university’s commitment to excellence. Accordingly, we particularly welcome applications from female scholars as well as members of traditionally underrepresented groups.
Our faculty are the engines that sustain our inclusive environment; NYUAD students come from more than 115 countries, with no single one nationality exceeding more than 15 percent of the total student population. Likewise, our faculty are highly diverse and community-minded: our modern campus is home to over 320 faculty who represent more than 45 different nationalities, all of whom bring a global perspective to their classrooms and research projects. Research is advanced by over 400 highly qualified research staff, who are likewise drawn from all over the world.
We are looking for candidates who:
- Are fluent in one or more of the following: creative coding, physical computing, VR/AR/XR, 3D modeling/animation, game design/development, web development, interaction design, user experience design, storytelling (through sound, video, animation, and other media), bioart practices, media studies
- Engage in a creative practice that has a critical component, actively exploring new tools and modes of expression, and are able to inspire students to do the same
- Possess an understanding of the aesthetic, cultural, social, political, and ethical implications of working with new communication technologies and emerging media
- Have experience teaching, preferably at the undergraduate or graduate level
- Good interpersonal skills to collaborate with colleagues and actively interact with students in a multicultural education setting are highly desirable. Connection or experience with the region is a plus.
We are seeking imaginative, skillful, and generous colleagues to help students learn how to use emerging media and communication technologies to enrich, enhance and improve people’s lives. We especially value candidates whose practice engages with the theoretical, historical, and social aspects of technology, and who are able to lead critical discussions concerning these topics with our students and community. We are actively seeking applicants that have a commitment to equity-forward teaching practices and who recognize and embrace the values of inclusivity and diversity, both in the classroom and in the field.
We believe that the creative use of new technology must be inclusive and should strive towards creating a more equitable society. Having a wide variety of individuals from different backgrounds and with different abilities working together to make creative use of new technology is not only important but paramount to our mission. As such, we expect that all faculty work towards the goal of inclusion, diversity, belonging, equity, and accessibility within our program.
Faculty teach 4 classes during the academic year (during Fall and Spring semesters). Engaging with students beyond class time in the program’s lab space through project assistance, personal direction, and community activities is key. Faculty members are expected to facilitate activities, events, conversations, labs, and visitors that enrich the community. They are also expected to actively participate in the larger sphere of departmental and university service.
Interested applicants should submit:
- Cover letter
- Curriculum vitae
- Teaching Statement
- Evidence of teaching effectiveness
- Two syllabi for applicable courses you have taught in the past (that you may want to teach again)
- Work samples that best represent areas of expertise outlined in the Cover Letter. Samples may include recordings, videos, published materials, interactive projects etc. Please provide a URL with brief documentation for each creative submission.
- Contact information for three references
- Review of applications will begin early spring 2022 on a rolling basis and the position will remain open until filled.
